The Percy Bilton Charity is a grant-making Trust which provides funding for UK registered charities predominantly working with:

1. Disadvantaged/underprivileged young people (under 25 years of age), particularly:
o Supported housing schemes and educational and training projects to encourage disadvantaged young people who may be homeless and/or unemployed away from crime, substance/alcohol misuse and homelessness, and
o Facilities for recreational activities and outdoor pursuits specifically for young people who are educationally or socially underprivileged or disadvantaged.

2. People with disabilities (physical or learning disabilities) or mental health problems, particularly:
o Residential, respite care, occupational and recreational establishments for children, young people and adults with physical or learning disabilities, or enduring mental health problems.

3. Older people (aged over 60), particularly:
o Day Centres, nursing and residential homes, sheltered accommodation and respite care for the frail or sufferers from dementia or age-related disorders.
o Projects to encourage older people to maintain their independence.

The following grant programmes are available:

1. Large Grants – one-off payments for capital expenditure of approximately £2,000 and over (the majority of grants fall within the range of £2,000 to £5,000) Preference is given to specific items of furniture and equipment (excluding office items) which the Charity can fund in their entirety. The average grant is for £3,000. Funding is not available for running costs or any type of revenue funding.

Please bear in mind that the Trust prefers to use the Charity’s funding to complete projects in order to maximise effectiveness and ensure grants are taken up as quickly as possible. This means that minibuses are only considered in the final stage of a fundraising appeal. Charities should only apply once they have a shortfall of £15,000 or less.

2. Small Grants – awards of up to £750 for a period of 1 year. Please note that the Charity is unable to provide part funding towards larger items such as electric wheelchairs or riser/recliner chairs.

Grants can be used, for example, to purchase tables and chairs, kitchen equipment, specialist adaptive equipment and recreational equipment.

During the year ended 31st March 2024, the Trust awarded the following grants:

o Grants to Institutions: £483,108 (2023: £426,266).
Grants to Individuals: £428,344 (2023: £418,457). Social Workers, Community Psychiatric Nurses and Occupational Therapists within Local Authorities or NHS Trusts may apply on behalf of individuals in financial need who have a disability or severe mental health problem, or who are over 65 on low income, for basic household items including white goods, single beds, flooring and clothing vouchers.

Please note that application need to be a registered charity to apply for a Large Grant. Applicants do not need to be registered to apply for a Small Grant but they are required to supply a reference from another charity, Council for Voluntary Service or, where such services still exist, a local authority youth service.
