THE MICHAEL TIPPETT MUSICAL FOUNDATION
One-off grants of between £500 and £3,000 are available to UK registered charities and charitable organisations for the performance or recording of works by the composer Michael Tippett (1905-1998).

o Application deadline: the Foundation meets once each year to consider applications for grant support. The 2024 deadline is MONDAY 30th SEPTEMBER 2024.
o Funder: The Michael Tippett Foundation (founded 1979. Charity number 278469. No grants were awarded during the year ended 31 August 2023 (see main text below; 2022: £20,000; 2021: £20,500)).
o Who can apply: UK registered charities, charitable organisations. Projects taking place in the community or in or out of an educational setting in the UK will be considered.

Following a review of its grant-making activities and a difficult year for the Foundation during which the charity’s bank account was frozen and no grants were awarded (this is documented under the ‘Activities and Achievements’ heading in the Foundation’s annual accounts), the Michael Tippett Music Foundation has announced that it has changed its grant-making policy, stating that:
“We are a small Foundation with funds from the royalties generated by performances, broadcasts and publication of the works of composer Michael Tippett (1905-1998).
“Receipts from Tippett royalties have decreased significantly due to the loss of performances during the Covid pandemic. For 2023 the Trustees have decided to focus the Foundation’s activity exclusively on the funding of performances and recording of music by Michael Tippett, with the aim of generating greater revenue for a wider range of activities in future years.“
For its 2024 awards, the Foundation is looking to support the performance or recording anywhere in the world of music composed by Michael Tippett. The Foundation will consider applications relating to any of his compositions but are likely to prioritise plans for specific works that are less frequently performed or projects which are unlikely to be mounted without additional financial support.
All performance material is available from Schott – sole publishers of Tippett’s music – and the award of a grant from the Foundation should not be taken to mean that any relevant performances licenses have been granted.
Grants are usually one-off awards and between £500 and £3,000, with the average grant in the region of £2,000. Larger grants may be considered for significant projects.
Funding is not available for:
o Capital purchase or development.
o Commissions for solely professional performance.
o Computer hardware, software or accessories.
o General appeals.
o General performance or recording costs.
o Projects that have already been completed.
o Research into the music of Michael Tippett.
o Retrospective costs.
o Study fees or maintenance costs for individuals, or
o The purchase of musical instruments or equipment, including computer hardware, software or accessories.

Applications should include:
o An attached project description (maximum length 2 single-sided A4 pages at 12pt type) for presentation to Trustees, which might include (as appropriate):
o A brief outline of what you are planning.
o The time scale of the project, including dates of concert or recording.
o How the project will be accessed (including, as appropriate, the names of promoters / venues / streaming sites / record companies). You may be asked to demonstrate the commitment of external organisations to this project.
o The key repertoire relevant to this application.
o The names of the principal musicians and other key participants, including brief biographical and any other relevant information (you may wish to provide external links).
o A demonstration of why the project would not be possible without additional income and, where possible, the specific application of extra funds.
o The specific sum requested, and
o An attached project budget on a single page, showing estimated expenditure, anticipated income from all sources, including grants and applications from/to other bodies, with explanatory notes if needed. The Trustees understand that a grant from the Tippett Foundation may be only one of a number of different funding sources.
The Trustees normally meet once each year to consider applications for grant support. For 2024, the deadline for receipt of applications is Monday 30th September 2024. Projects for consideration should start not earlier than January 2025.

All applications received will be acknowledged. The Foundation aims to give applicants a decision within 12 weeks of the deadline.
