George C Gibson was the nephew of the Welsh ship owner William James Tatem (1868–1942). Tatem was born at Appledore, North Devon, ran away to sea, suffered shipwreck and yellow fever before settling down in Cardiff in 1886 as a clerk with the tramp steamer owners Anning Bros. By 1897 he had sufficient funds to set up in business on his own and ordered the tramp steamer Lady Lewis in the name of the Lady Lewis Steamship Co. Ltd. Tatem’s business prospered. By 1900 he had 6 steamers and in 1903 there were 13 ships in his fleet. George Gibson took over the business in 1943.

The G C Gibson Charitable Trust offers grants of between £1,000 and £10,000 to a wide range of charities. The trustees are all highly involved in various philanthropic activities and priority for support is given to charities that the trustees have previously worked with. However, the Trust adds a few new charities each year.

For these new applications, the Trust now focuses on a particular theme for projects which it  changes from year to year. The current focus is on capital or product purchases for smaller UK registered charities (i.e. those with an income of under £1 million) in the areas of:

o Education.
o Social inclusion,
 and
o Physical and mental health.

The Trust has committed to awarding 10 grants of up to £5,000 for UK charities working in the above areas. Projects should have a maximum cost of about £20,000. This means that the Trust is unlikely to offer a small contribution to a large project.

Funding is not available for:

o Animal sanctuaries.
o Cancer care and research.
o Educational farms.
o Hospices (although the Trust did provided a small amount of grant funding to hospices in 2022/23)
o Riding and carriage driving for the disabled.
o Theatres,
or
o The fabric of Christian Churches

Application is via the online application form available on the Trust’s website (scroll down the page to the ‘How to Apply’ heading).

The deadline for applications is Monday 30th September 2024.
