Charity Sector Under Pressure

The Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) has reported today that the ongoing cost of living crisis is continuing to impact the voluntary sector — with rising demand for services and a decline in donations pushing many charities to their limits.

  • Closures and Redundancies:
Charity closures and staff cuts are on the rise, including the shutdown of Chwarae Teg and The Care Collective in Wales, and the closure of four Scope shops across the country.
  • Falling Donations, Rising Demand:
Donor numbers have dropped from 62% in 2020 to 49% in 2024, while the need for charitable services has tripled from 3% to 9%.
  • Sector-Wide Strain:
Increased costs, higher National Insurance, and reduced funding are affecting organisations of all sizes, leading to mergers and, in some cases, closure.
  • Support and Guidance Available:
Charities are urged to review the Charity Commission’s Managing Financial Difficulties – CC12 guidance.
