Views Sought on National Vision for Children and Young People with Learning Disabilities

Improvement Cymru is calling for feedback from children and young people with learning disabilities, as well as their caregivers, on their future health and wellbeing aspirations. The organisation aims to refine a national vision and action plan to enhance the lives of these young individuals.

Over the past 18 months, the Improvement Cymru Learning Disability team has engaged extensively with children, young people, and their caregivers through consultations, listening events, school visits, and workshops. This participatory approach has ensured that the vision reflects the perspectives of those it will impact the most.

The team is now seeking further input on the final draft of the vision. This vision is dedicated to ensuring that children and young people with learning disabilities lead happy and healthy lives, both now and in the future.

Rebecca Curtis, Senior Improvement Manager, explained the initiative: “Our journey towards a national vision began with the Learning Disability Strategic Action Plan (2022-2026). This plan aims to establish a consistent, accessible, and comprehensible approach to children’s services across Wales, improving all aspects of transition services.

“We engaged with families, professionals, and young people across Wales to understand the challenges and aspirations for future services. Themes such as feeling valued, included, and connected were crucial in shaping our vision.

“We believe that health, education, and social care sectors must collaborate to support children and young people in recognizing their rights and involving them in decisions that affect their lives.”

Improvement Cymru is eager to gather feedback from young people with learning disabilities and those who care for and work with them to ensure the vision meets their needs and aspirations.
