The Trust makes small and medium-sized grants to a wide range of UK charities working in the UK and/or overseas. Principal areas of interest are the arts, work in prisons, cost-of-living, education, disability, human rights, social policy and research.

Currently celebrating its 50th year as a grant-making charity, the Robert Gavron Charitable Trust is a family-based charity with its offices in Hornchurch, East London.

Although the Trust’s objectives are wide-ranging, and while it provides grant support to a range of charitable causes in the UK and overseas, its principal areas of interest are:

o The arts.
o Charities working in prisons.
o Cost-of-Living and – particularly – Food Banks and related charities.
o Education.
o Human rights.
o Organisations working with people with a disability, and
o Social policy and research.

The Trust has stated that it is unlikely to change its funding priorities in the foreseeable future.

In many cases the Trustees prefer to make grants to organisations whose work they personally know and admire. This does not, however, mean that charities unknown to the Trustees personally do not receive grants. These often include small charities working in areas which cannot easily raise funds and which are without the resources themselves for professional fundraising. The Trust has also continued to help previously funded small charities which come into these categories.

The Trust can provide financial support in the form of either one-off grants or commitments to donations spread over more than one year.

During the year ended 5th April 2024, the Trust awarded grants totalling £429,761 (2022: £583,380).

Grants made ranged from under £3,000 to £47,600 (to the Barbados Cricket Foundation).

Please note that the Trust does not have a website. Further information is, however, available on the Charity Commission website.

Applications may be made at any time in writing. The trustees meet formally approximately four times throughout the year to review requests for grant support.
