Capital grants of between £500 and £5,000 are available to UK registered charities, exempt charities and Community Interest Companies working in the areas of education (relating to organic farming, animal husbandry, veterinary science, animal welfare and animal surgery), visual and performing arts, medical research, disability and severe illness, the preservation of buildings of architectural or historical significance, and accommodation for those in need.

o Who can apply: UK registered charities or unregistered charities that are excepted, exempt or below the threshold for registration (if the charity is unregistered you must explain why), Community Interest Companies limited by guarantee and registered societies. Eligible organisation must have been active for at least 2 years prior to applying to the Foundation.

The Sylvia Waddilove Foundation was established to continue the philanthropy of Sylvia Waddilove after her death in 2001. The Foundation provides grants to charities and some not-for-profit organisations. Innovative projects that are less than 5 years old are favoured. Applicants must demonstrate that their project is of a capital nature to ensure the Foundation delivers lasting public benefit.
The Foundation provides grants of between £500 and £5,000 to organisations in the following categories (please note that the Foundation will normally expect applicants to have sought and secured matched funding for their project proposal):
1. Promotion and education of organic farming and non-domestic animal husbandry and veterinary science:
o A grant is awarded for capital costs only.
o The applicant’s annual income is less than £1,000,000.
2. Visual and Performing Arts. The Foundation supports visual arts projects, theatres and theatre productions, and dance, ballet and opera in the following ways:
o A visual arts project must involve the organisation’s beneficiaries and a grant is awarded for capital costs only.
o Theatres may request a grant for capital projects (which includes the costs of building works, and materials and equipment for workshops).
o Grants of £1,000 are given for the running costs of new theatre productions. Applications should focus on the subject matter of the play.
o The applicant’s income is less than £500,000.
o Dance, ballet and opera applicants may apply for bursary funding only.
o Music is not supported as a performing art.
3. Medical Research:
o A grant will be awarded for running (revenue) costs and capital costs
o Research must not be statistical and should be lab-based.
o There are no income thresholds
4. Relief of disability and severe illness:
o A grant is awarded for capital costs only.
o Except in the case of a hospice, income must be less than £500,000.
5. The preservation of buildings of architectural or historical significance:
o A grant is awarded for capital costs only.
o The building is owned or leased (for a term of 10 years or more) to the applicant.
o The project cost is less than £5 million.
o The applicant’s income is less than £3 million.
o The building is not used for religious or academic purposes.
6. The accommodation of those in need:
o A grant will be awarded for capital costs only.
o The applicant’s income is less than £3 million.
During the year ended 31st December 2023, the Foundation awarded grants totalling £248,036 (2022: £231,795; 2021: £252,500).

Funding is not available for:
o Community Interest Companies limited by shares.
o “Friends of” charities.
o Individuals.
o Not-for-profit companies (which are not charities).
o Schools or religious organisations, or
o Social enterprises.
