Spotlight on Safeguarding: Protecting Vulnerable Children and Adults

Safeguarding involves recognizing and responding to abuse, harm, or neglect and is a critical responsibility aimed at protecting and promoting the welfare of children and adults at risk.

Who Needs Safeguarding?

  • Children: Defined as anyone under the age of 18.
  • Adults at Risk: Individuals aged 18 or over who may require community care services due to mental health issues, disabilities, age, or illness. An adult is considered “at risk” if they cannot:
    • Look after themselves
    • Protect themselves from harm or exploitation
    • Report abuse independently

Everyone has a role to play in:

  • Identifying signs of abuse or risk
  • Knowing what actions to take if abuse is suspected or disclosed
  • Understanding basic safeguarding laws
  • Reporting concerns promptly
